What Is the Dental Implant Procedure?
The dental implant procedure is a detailed, multi-step process designed to replace missing teeth with a durable, natural-looking option. Dr. Lewis begins by conducting a thorough evaluation of your oral health, which includes 3D imaging to assess the bone structure and determine the best placement for the implant. The first step of the procedure involves surgically placing a small titanium post into your jawbone, where the missing tooth's root would have been. This post acts as an artificial tooth root. The gums are then sutured, and the implant is left to heal for about 3 – 6 months, during which time the bone naturally grows around the post, securely holding it in place. Once the implant has fully fused with the bone in a process called osseointegration, a small connector called an abutment is placed on top of the post. Finally, a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture is attached to the abutment, completing the restoration.
